Competitor Forum Declaration - December 6, 2003

The following declaration statement was debated and approved by participants at Competitor Forum I, held in New York City on December 6, 2003:

COMPETITOR FORUM DECLARATION

We the undersigned, being official entrants in the World Trade Center site memorial competition, gathered in collaboration and deliberation in New York City this day, declare the following statement of principles in this process:

• We strongly support the official mission statement and guidelines of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which were developed with broad public input and are superb.

• We care most that the high ideals of the memorial mission statement be realized, and believe that public concerns over the eight memorial finalists reflect a departure from these guidelines.

• We now observe that none of the finalist design proposals has been received by the public as the memorial that would "create an original and powerful statement of enduring and universal symbolism" that the mission statement had hoped to bring forward.

Therefore, consistent with the stated wishes of the jury, we support the public exhibition, in physical or electronic form, at the earliest possible opportunity, of all 5201 competition presentation boards, and a modification of the selection process from this point forward, as the public wisdom will dictate, to create the best possible outcome on whatever timeframe may be required.
